Pahadi Culture

A deep dive into the heritage, traditions, and stories of Himalayan communities across Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jaunsar-Bawar — Garhwali, Kumaoni, Himachali, and Jaunsari culture passed down through generations.

Regions & Communities

Pahadi culture spans the western Himalayas. Uttarakhand has Garhwal (Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi) and Kumaon (Nainital, Almora, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Champawat). Himachal Pradesh includes Shimla, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba, Sirmaur, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti. Jaunsar-Bawar in western Garhwal (Dehradun district) has a distinct identity with its own customs, dialect, and traditions — often considered a bridge between hills and plains.

  • Garhwal: Harsil apples, Valley of Flowers, Badrinath, Kedarnath
  • Kumaon: Nainital lakes, Jim Corbett, Pithoragarh border culture
  • Himachal: Kullu Valley, Kangra tea, Shimla, Dharamshala
